How is sugar measured?
How to check your blood sugar – A blood sugar meter is required for blood sugar testing. The meter monitors the quantity of glucose in a little blood sample, often from the fingertip, which is placed on a disposable test strip. Even if you use a CGM, you’ll need a blood sugar meter to regularly calibrate your CGM device.
- Wash and thoroughly dry your hands. (Food and other things might result in erroneous readings.)
- Place a test strip in the meter.
- Puncture the side of your fingertip with the lancet (needle) included in your test kit.
- Touch and hold the test strip’s edge to the blood droplet.
- After a few seconds, the meter will reveal your blood sugar level on the screen.
Some meters are capable of analyzing blood from other sites, such as the forearm or hand. However, these readings may not be as reliable as those obtained from the fingers, particularly after a meal or after activity, when blood sugar levels fluctuate more often. Alternative calibration locations are not advised for CGMs.
